NewPaper
--------
Description
-----------
Newpaper is a Windows 3.1 application to automatically change
the wallpaper each time Windows is started up. The working
directory can be specified so it can work with .BMP files stored
in any directory.
Installation
------------
1. Install NEWPAPER.EXE in the directory of your choice.
2. Use Program Manager's "File | New" command to install NewPaper
in any Program Group. If you choose the 'Startup' group, then
Windows will execute it automatically every time it starts up so
you can have a different wallpaper file every day. If you put it
in another group (or even if it remains in the Startup group), you
can also activate it manually by double-clicking it (as usual).
3. Working Directory:
When you add NewPaper to a group, you can choose the 'working
directory'. If you leave it blank, Windows will use the ...\windows
directory (as for all Windows applications). In this case, NewPaper
will work with the .BMP files residing in that directory. If you
have another directory in which you keep your .BMP files, specify
this as the working directory.
Note that you can have several icons (each with a different working
directory) for any Windows application, including Newpaper.
How to Use NewPaper
-------------------
Put Newpaper in your 'Startup' group and/or run it by double-clicking
it. Newpaper has no menus, no dialog boxes and no interaction. When
activated it runs (very) briefly, changes the wallpaper and terminates.
If you don't like the bitmap file Newpaper chose when Windows started up
(i.e. it doesn't suit your mood that day), simply double click the icon
and it will select the 'next' one. This is actually easier to use than
Control Panel: you can cycle through the bitmap files faster and with
fewer clicks.
How it Works
------------
If you don't have any wallpaper selected (in your WIN.INI file), or
if it can't find any *.BMP files in the 'working directory',
Newpaper does nothing.
Otherwise, it gets a list of the *.BMP files and changes the
wallpaper to the name of the file in the list which follows the
current current wallpaper file. If the current file is the last
file, it selects the first one.
Cost of NewPaper
----------------
NewPaper is a FREE application. Use and distribute as you wish,
with my compliments. If you like it, you can buy me a beer the next
time you're in Ottawa.
